Rather than forcing plants into an environment they don’t want to inhabit, we work with the aspect and allow the garden to become what it naturally wants to be.
Creating layers of woodland planting
Like a natural woodland, the planting is built in layers. Taller trees create the canopy, moving down through smaller trees and shrubs into woodland perennials, ferns and generous ground-cover planting. The overall feeling is verdant and lush, with seasonal woodland flowers and changing foliage bringing moments of colour and interest throughout the year.
Plants such as ferns, hellebores, epimediums and woodland grasses can thrive beneath trees and in areas of dappled or deeper shade, creating rich layers of texture where more conventional garden planting might struggle.
Designing with shade, not against it
Successful woodland garden design begins with understanding the conditions already present: the depth and duration of shade, existing trees, soil, moisture and the changing patterns of light throughout the year. From there, we create plant communities suited to those conditions rather than continually trying to change them.
Deadwood, fallen logs and other natural materials can become part of the garden too — providing habitat for fungi, insects and other wildlife while adding texture, age and a strong sculptural quality to the landscape. Elements of edible and forageable planting can also be woven through the different layers, bringing another kind of abundance to the woodland garden.
